Each organization has at
least one person in their midst who doesn’t get it with employee recognition.
Which is why when I was in a meeting this week with several representatives from an organization I am working with, someone boldly asked me a question related to a person who is likely a non-recognizer. This courageous individual asked, how do you respond to people who ask, “Why are you working so hard on recognition?”
They are asking how do
you address naysayers in an organization. They want to know how they should
stand up to these types of people and substantiate the merit of the
time and effort they are putting into the cause of improving employee
recognition.
How do should you respond to someone like this who is negative, opinionated, and sometimes even derails your efforts to make recognition happen in your organization?
Allen Saunders, an American writer and journalist first coined the line “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” back in a 1957 Reader’s Digest article.
Sometimes this happens to you and I who work in the recognition space. Things will happen at work by people that negatively disrupts the good you are busy planning with your recognition programs and initiatives.
And nothing is worse than when it is a leader who is the disruptor of your recognition programs and plans.
Consider these tactics for handling the inevitable negative, disruptive leader.
Getting complaints about your recognition programs, or having to listen to the naysayers in the room about employee recognition practices, can be a draining and daunting experience to deal with.
One big secret for dealing with negativity around recognition initiatives is to treat each encounter as a gift. I’ll share with you what I mean by this, shortly.

I never want to lead you astray and say that every time you give recognition it works miracles.
Nope. That’s not always the case.
Don’t ever imagine when you give a person some well deserved recognition that the lights will shine down on them, and confetti and balloons will instantly pour down from the rafters, and your employee will love you forever.
Alas, giving recognition does not always hit the target you want it to.
