Master These 5 Behaviors for Great Recognition

In my work to help people give real recognition wherever they work, I’ve been able to conduct research on the essential behaviors effective managers do well in giving employees authentic recognition.

I identified a total of 40 behaviors observed in people recognizing one another. These were grouped into 5 categories or domains to help us focus people more clearly on the different types of behaviors.

Then we solicited experts in the field of employee recognition to rank these behaviors by how important they were and the level of positive impact they had and how frequently effective recognizers used them.

What I want to do for you today is give you just the top 5 behaviors that if you will implement and improve upon will make you a better recognizer of those around you.

How To Be Full of Compliments

Well, here it is again!

March 1st is World Compliment Day – a simple reminder on the calendar to encourage you and I to be more mindful of giving people compliments.

Mark Twain made the act of giving compliments famous when he said, “I can live for two months on a good compliment.”

Yet many of us need more than a calendar reminder or a quote from a writer and humorist to spur us on with compliment giving.

With so many great things going on and so many wonderful people to learn from, live and love, you would think we all would be full of compliments.

Seems this is not always the case though. So I am going to help you discover how you can be full of compliments to hand out as needed. (more…)

Does your recognition sound hollow? Has anyone shared how your recognition doesn’t come across as meaningful to people?

Squeeze In Some Recognition Time, Right Now!

I keep hearing people have no time for recognition.

Time is the number one reason given by managers around the world for not recognizing the people they work with.

Yet, when I use a timer to time people on how long it takes to praise or acknowledge someone, it takes very little time to give recognition.

So…lets squeeze in some recognition time, right now!

How Frequently Should You Give Recognition?

One of the amazing findings coming out of surveying employees about recognition is the fact that so few people feel sufficiently recognized.

You are probably aware of Gallup’s “Q12 Employee Engagement” survey. They have a recognition question which asks, “In the last 7 days I have received recognition or praise for doing good work.” It seems reasonable that a person should be acknowledged at least weekly. All people want is to be recognized or praised for their progress, some positive action, or recognized for contributions made. (more…)

When No One Gives Recognition To People

Hard work always pays off, right?

You probably heard wise counsel like this from parents, teachers or mentors along your journey of life so far.

And, for the most part, I think it does pay off. I will further say that in the long-term hard work always pays dividends.

But for the short-term it can appear there are problems in getting acknowledged for doing hard work. (more…)

Don’t Ever Pay People Compliments!

You have probably heard someone talking about “paying someone a compliment” or being “paid a compliment.”

The funny thing is you don’t actually pay anyone anything. No money or goods are ever exchanged.

You don’t ever pay someone a compliment; you give it freely with no expectation of anything in return. (more…)
